REGIONAL INFORMATION FOR MENORCA
With a surface area of 702 square kilometres and
216 kilometres of coastline, Menorca, the most
easterly of the Balearic Islands, is the first point
in Spain to receive the sun's rays.
The
island is divided into 8 municipal districts and has
approx 90,000 inhabitants.
The island is
mainly flat with the highest point being Monte Toro
at 358 metres.
The north has a rugged
coastline and the south with ravines which open out
on to white sandy beaches.The capital Mahon has a
natural port which is one of the largest natural
harbours in the world.
The climate is
typically Mediterranean with a mean temperature of
between 16 and 17C and an average of 2,452 hours of
sunshine per year.
Menorca has some of the
best conserved ntural sites in the Med, and due to
it's environmental uniqueness, was declared a
Bioshere Reserve on 8th Oct 1993. This title is part
of the Mand and Biosphere programme set up by UNESCO
in 1970, to reconcile the mentality and the use of
natural resources, giving rise to the present day
concept of sustainable development.
Menorca
has the famous Es Grau Nature Reserve, together with
six other nature reserves and 19 areas of special
natural interest. This island is truly a natural
paradise formed by ravines, grottoes and underwater
caves as well as unique species of flora and fauna.
Son Parc Golf is a championship quality course,
ideal for beginners and experienced golfers alike.
The course is both challenging and picturesque. It
is located just a few hundred metres from the award
winning Son Parc beach on the north coast of
Menorca.
Diving is very popular in Menorca,
and there are several diving schools at which you
can sample the sport for the first time. For the
more experienced diver, there are some wonderful
dive sites.
Snorkelling is a great
pastime in Menorca thanks to the abundant marine
life. Snorkelling gear is available in all the
resorts.
Sailing and boating is a big pastime
also, and there are many boat-hire companies
operating in the big resorts. Check with them before
travelling with regard to the sailing qualifications
required. Windsurfer hire is also possible at many
resorts.
Aqua parks: There are water parks in
the West, at Los Delfines near Ciutadella, and at
Cala en Bosc.
Cricket is played throughout
the summer at Biniparrel Cricket Ground, San Luis.

Horse riding and cycling
are all available.
Mahon airport links to all
major UK airports in summer and many European and
International airports throughout the year. In
winter you can fly from UK to Palma or Barcelona
with EasyJet and then the short flight to Menorca.
There is 1 flight a week in the winter with Monarch
from Luton every Friday.
Due to property
development being run by the Local Island Council
there are strict rules set out by them. There is a
limit to the number of floors that can be built in
hotels, commercial and local apartment buildings.
